Capital Punishment in Texas Presentation Assignment: 20-Slide PowerPoint on Death Penalty Laws, Lethal Injection and Crime Control since the 1920s

Capital Punishment in Texas PowerPoint Presentation: Death Penalty Laws, Lethal Injection and Policy since the 1920s

Subject Criminology / criminal justice (university level, United States)
Task Microsoft PowerPoint presentation with detailed speaker notes
Length At least 20 content slides (title, reference and question slides do not count)
Sources At least seven outside sources, mainly peer-reviewed or academic research
Format APA guidelines, with in-text citations throughout and a reference slide

This criminology presentation asks students to trace how Texas has used capital punishment from 1923 to 2026: the statutes behind it, the effect of Furman v. Georgia, the lethal injection protocols adopted in 1977, key court challenges, time on death row, racial disparities and the evidence on deterrence. Every content slide needs speaker notes that carry the detail you would say in a live presentation.

Assignment Instructions

Create a 20-slide (minimum) Microsoft PowerPoint presentation in which you discuss the use of capital punishment in Texas and related policies since the 1920s. Include the following:

  • Discuss how Texas has carried out executions from 1923 to 2026. Include the applicable policies, laws and statutes in your discussion and mention the bill name/number.
  • Analyze and substantively discuss the issues and impact of Furman v. Georgia on death penalty policies and legislation, not only in Texas but throughout the United States.
  • Discuss the lethal injection process, policies and protocols that were adopted by the Texas legislature in 1977. Explain how and why the protocols have changed several times since 1977, and be specific.
  • Analyze and substantively discuss three legal Texas court challenges to Texas’ death penalty-related or lethal injection policies and protocols over the past 40 years. List specific court cases, the applicable Texas-based legal challenges, and the outcomes.
  • Outline legislative and policy steps that Texas has taken to affect the length of time a person spends on death row before execution.
  • Research current capital punishment policies in the United States and discuss execution alternatives (at least two) that Texas could adopt if the United States Supreme Court ruled that the lethal injection method of execution is unconstitutional. Explain the alternatives in detail and why they could hold up to court/constitutional scrutiny.
  • Identify a criminological theory that is aligned with Texas’ use of the death penalty and explain this theory in detail.
  • Analyze and substantively discuss racial disparities in capital punishment cases and sentencing in Texas, including data to support your analysis.
  • Assess and substantively discuss the impact that capital punishment policies in Texas have had on crime control from 1923 to 2026. Include data and an analysis of the data to support your assessment. Select a state that does not use capital punishment and compare its violent crime rates with those in Texas (include the data). Explain whether states that practise capital punishment have lower crime rates or enhanced community safety, again using data and an analysis of the data.

Presentation Requirements

  • Format the presentation consistent with APA guidelines, including citations throughout wherever outside research is used and a reference page slide.
  • Use a minimum of seven outside sources (mainly peer-reviewed or academic research) to support your findings, conclusions and recommendations.
  • Each content slide must have information in its Speaker Notes section: this is the information you would discuss during a live presentation.
  • The title slide, reference slide(s) and any question slides do not count towards the slide requirement; 20 slides of solid content with detailed speaker notes are expected.
