What is bias versus a well-supported opinion? Some people think that to have any opinion at all is to be biased. However, this is not the case. To be biased, the writing must have a slant towards one side or another. To avoid that, one must use research to prove one’s case.
An academic researcher would have an opinion or hypothesis about something related to their field, and then do research to discover whether that hypothesis is true. Then their findings would be reviewed by a panel of their peers to verify and make sure it is credible and well-balanced.
You as a writer should follow a similar process. You might have an idea about something and want to form a well-supported opinion. To do so, you would research the topic to find answers to your questions about the topic.
If you can be open to what the research tells you and you use credible research sources, you will have an unbiased essay because you are using research to help support what you are saying, whereas a biased essay would rest on opinion alone, less credible or no research, or misinformation.
