Vocational Scenario

Your employer, Highfields Renewable Energy Ltd. (HRE) has been tasked by a large electricity supplier (EDFOPUS),  to manage a small-scale experiment before they commit to a larger full-scale project at the same site.

The location is near Grimsby and is a large inlet sea water, Due to its position it will be subject to low and high tides up to 5m deep at high tide and 3.5m at low tide. Due to its location the water is never rough in terms of storms, but it can occasionally be choppy and is subject to the wake of any larger pleasure craft that pass.

Grimsby is seen to be the ideal location as many of the UKs renewable companies are based here. HRE will construct a floating solar array based on a quantity of Longi 400W panels in the acquired area, and install a single Aeronautica wind turbine to a platform. The output from both the panels and the turbine shall terminate on the platform (as described below).

At the heart of the floating panels will be a float mounted metal fabricated platform. The platform will be suitable for up to 4 personnel and their equipment – toolboxes and instruments. It is envisaged that the frames basic footprint will be approximately 8 x 6 metres and it will weight approximately 3000Kg. The frame must include handrails and brackets to moor a small boat. The platform will be equipped with an outboard motor so that it can be moved under its own power although, once in position it is unlikely that it will move again unto decommissioning or transfer.

The frame could be used night and day, and it is important that it is lit both in terms of task lighting but also all of the night with maritime lighting to avoid problems with pleasure craft that might be using the area.

Electricity should also be available to use equipment and power any instrumentation.

All electricity needed for the task can be sourced from the solar panels / turbines as any losses are considered negligible.

Note – You do not need to consider the HDPE pontoons that the frame will be mounted on – an order has already been placed for modular plastic floats from tinypontoon boats (https://www.tinypontoonboats.com/pontoons/)

Task 1

Task 1a (750 words max)

Identify potential stakeholders for the overall project and explain what influence their requirements would have had on the overall design brief specification which is to be produced as laid out in appendix 1.

*** All current legislation (specifically the workboat code, as applicable) must be followed during

manufacture (Section 4) and delivery / electrical installation and test (section 8). The duration of this design project will be 12 weeks. ***

Task 1b (Image and report 250 words +/- 10%)

Evaluate potential planning techniques and after selecting the method that you feel is most appropriate to your project produce a graphical, (visual), plan with milestones that will start at week 1 and complete at week 12. Your chosen planning method should be able to demonstrate critical path analysis or the information transposed into another method and explain its use.

Task 1c (Report 250 words + / – 10%)

Compare and contrast your completed design specification against the requirements of the workboat code as they apply to the design.

Task 2

Task 2a –Graphical response, annotated images & 350 words (max)

Using appropriate design techniques produce two alternative arrangements as a solution to the project as appropriate to your pathway.

Manufacturing Pathway – produce an annotated design for the frame either as a complete frame or alternatively as a modular arrangement making recommendations for materials and assembly methods regardless of which option you select to be the most appropriate.

Mechanical Pathway – produce an annotated design and an alternative for the anchorage of the frame to ensure that it remains relatively static and does not drift into the floating solar panels which are 1 metre away (at closest) allowing for high and low tides and any surface disturbances (up to 1.5 metres of upward swell).

Electrical & Electronic Pathway – produce an annotated design and an alternative for the supply to maritime lighting which must always illuminate at dusk and then turn off at sunrise. Any task lighting or other power requirements must not affect this function as it is safety critical.

Explore industry standard evaluation and analytical tools in formulating possible technical solutions Recommend justified improvements to your technical solutions.

Once you have selected your recommended solution apply suitable software to develop your design.

Task 3

Task 3a (500 words + / – 10%)

Using the layout in appendix 2, (below). Prepare an industry standard engineering technical design report explaining the role played by design specifications and standards on the design as well as any environmental impact and assess any compliance, safety, or risk management issues specific to it.

Task 3b (250 words + / – 10%)

Evaluate how effective the design report is to produce a finished product which fully complies with the original brief.

Task 4

Task 4a –  Presentation (10 – 12 slides) and a written report (250 words max)

Explain possible communication strategies and presentation methods that could be used to inform the stakeholders of a recommended solution and present your design solution to an audience. – grading as per appendix 3.

Task 4b – Written report (250 words max)

Reflect on the effectiveness of your chosen communication strategy for your presentation.

Task 4c – 300 words + / – 10%

Justify potential improvements to the design solution and the presentation based on your reflection and audience feedback from your presentation.
