It is important to be exposed to court cases and associated documents so you can learn how to identify relevant information. This assignment will help you become familiar with the layout of court documents as you search for information in a U.S. Supreme Court case of your choosing. Use your Essential Criminal Law textbook and the internet to help you locate information about your selected U.S. Supreme Court case.
In Week 1, you were preparing for a job interview for a paralegal position at a law firm. Now you have been hired and one of your first tasks is to review a U.S. Supreme Court case and provide a summary presentation to the firm’s lawyers who will be referencing the case as they prepare for another trial.
Select a criminal law case from the Opinions of the Court page of the U.S. Supreme Court website. PLEASE NOTE: The U.S. Supreme Court handles many different types of cases, from First Amendment violations to discrimination to presidential issues to, yes, criminal cases. THIS IS A COURSE IN CRIMINAL LAW. The link above includes many different types of cases. Be sure the case you select involves a criminal law violation; that is, a defendant who was charged with a crime, went to trial and was convicted of that crime. I urge you to run your choice by me first to make sure your presentation deals with a case appropriate for this assignment and course.
Create a 10- to 12-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation (excluding the title, introductory and reference slides from the total number of slides required), with speaker notes*, in which you address the following:
- Summarize the case.
- Who were the main parties in the case?
- What were the charges?
- What defense was used? Refer to Ch. 6 of Essential Criminal Law for possible defenses.
- What was the decision?
- Identify the functions and effects of criminal law in modern society reflected in the
case you selected.
- What function did the law serve in the case?
- What effect did the law have in the case?
Cite all sources used according to APA guidelines.

A PowerPoint presentation is not merely a paper divided up among slides. A PowerPoint is supposed to be eye-catching and interesting to the viewer. In addition to whatever words are on the slide, the slide itself should have a meaningful background and whatever graphics you feel are appropriate.
Aside from the graphics, the slides should contain bullet points of what you will be “discussing”. The bulk of the information you are supplying will be in the speaker notes.* This is how a PowerPoint is presented to an audience. The slides will give the headlines of what you will be talking about and what the audience will see. What you will be telling the audience, in explaining those bullet points, is what you will write in the speaker notes. These, therefore, must have all the information you might have written in a paper.
I do not want to see a lot of verbiage in the slides, and I do not want to see empty speaker notes. Leaving the notes blank or including nothing but a reference is insufficient.
Speaking of references, every slide and all speaker notes must have cites as to where the information came from. If photographs or other graphics (illustrations, etc.) are used in the slides, these must be cited and referenced also. And there must be at least one reference slide at the end of the presentation.
