NURS3006 – EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE IN NURSING
Summary Title Assessment 1 Type Short Written Response Length 700 words |
Rationale
Evidence-based practice constitutes a vital component of delivering high-quality nursing care and is integral to upholding nursing standards. The objective of this assessment is to facilitate an enhanced understanding of the significance of evidence-based practice. This assessment is designed to provide you with an opportunity to apply your proficiencies and expertise in executing the preliminary stages of evidence-based practice.
Task Description
There are two parts to this assessment.
1) Identifying the importance of evidence-based practice to nursing practice,
2) Identifying a clinical problem.
Part 1: Identifying the importance of evidence-based practice to nursing practice (approximately 300-350 words)
In Part One, you must explain why evidence-based practice is important in nursing practice. As part of your answer, you must identify the link between evidence-based practice and the NMBA Registered Nursing Standards. Your answer should be supported by at least two references. These two references do not include the NMBA Registered Nursing Standards.

Your answer must:
- Clearly define evidence-based practice.
- ii. Clearly outline the benefits of evidence-based practice and why evidence-based practice is important to nursing care.
- iii. Identify why it is important for nurses to learn about and be involved in evidence-based practice projects.
- iv. Be linked to the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice Nursing. You do not need to write the standards in full. Choose the standard/s that link or support evidence-based practice and identify them numerically (for example 1.1., 2.6.), then explain more broadly why you feel these standards are linked to evidence-based practice. https://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/codes-guidelines-statements/professional-standards/registered-nurse-standards-for-practice.aspx
- v. Be supported by at least two references in addition to the reference for the Registered nurse standards.
- vi. Use academic writing conventions including paragraphs.
Part 2: Identifying a clinical problem (approximately 300-350 words)
In part 2, you must Identify a clinical problem from the included scenario titled Scenario 1 Alex Thorne.
Your answer must:
- Identify the clinical problem
- ii. Explain why the problem exists (for example: knowledge or practice gaps, process inefficiencies, competing priorities, and conflicting systems).
- iii. Outline the significance and harm of the problem using the available literature. This must be done using current literature.
- iv. Use at least two supporting references.
- v. Use academic writing conventions including paragraphs.
Scenario 1 Alex Thorne You have recently begun work as a registered nurse in a small private hospital. You have been handed over the below patient, Alex Thorn Alex Thorn is an 87-year-old gentleman who has been living in a residential care facility for the last five years. He is demonstrating signs and symptoms of delirium due to a urinary tract infection. He is feeling hot and restless, and also feels an urgent need to go to the toilet to urinate, frequently. He recognises his surroundings but does not know where he is. He wants to see Heather, his daughter. His observations from one hour ago were:
These observations are recorded on paper patient notes with no Rapid Response System triggers such as the Between the Flags (NSW) or MEWs (Qld). You are familiar with the symptoms of SEPSIS and ask the nurse handing over to initiate the Hospital SEPSIS pathway. The nurse indicates that she is unaware of a SEPSIS pathway and states “Yeah, we should keep an eye on it, but for now let’s just get him some additional analgesia and hold off calling for an escalation in care, as I don’t really want to bother the consultant. I heard that they are on a very busy list today” |
