Max Weber

In this assignment, you will be applying the work of Max Weber to an organization of your choice.  For instance, you could choose a hospital, bank, professional athletic team, university, corporation, etc.

A –  Fully describe at least three major ideas/concepts in the work of Weber. You have three assigned readings from Weber (see “Things to do”). One idea/concept must come from  each  of them.

B – Apply each of them to the characteristics, processes, and/or outcomes of whatever organization you choose in providing your assessment of whether the work of Weber is useful in understanding modern organizations. Present specific evidence to support whatever position you take.

Label each section.

In doing this assignment, information on Weber in section A must be  solely from the textbook  AND Spirit of Capitalism article.

In section B, in addition to information from the material on Weber in our textbook  and/or The Spirit of Capitalism, you must also use information from at least  two outside sources. The outside sources can be but need not be from academic sources. They must, however, be credible sources. Someone’s blog rantings or an opinion article would not be an appropriate source.

FEEDBACK:

The first two sections of Part A are really significant improvements in the extent to which the descriptions are thorough and well-developed. The third paragraph on religion is more brief and could benefit from additional information. Try to be consistent in fully developing each section of our assignments.

In Part B you demonstrated critical thinking in drawing some connections between the three concepts and crime in modern society. However, the instructions for Part B state the following:

“In section B, in addition to information from the textbook, you must also use information on crime in modern America from at least two outside sources. “

You did include information from outside sources in Part B, but you did not include anything from the textbook. Always go back and reread the instructions after completing your draft. This will help you to avoid leaving parts out.

Finally, you have cited all of the quoted passages in your analysis. However, you have numerous paraphrased passages for which no citations were provided. As I indicated in the video for the Module 1 assignment (at 2:22), you must cite not only quoted information but paraphrased information as well. This is information you have taken from a source but rewritten entirely in your own words. Here is an example. You wrote:

“Another idea from Durkheim’s work is that social life is religious. The purpose of religious ceremonies is to worship social life. Religions enhance cohesion among members of a society. They reaffirm ideas and sentiments that bring members of a society together. Religious ceremonies enable members to stick together.”

This is accurate and in paraphrased form, but you haven’t followed it with a citation. The only citation you have in that paragraph is for a quoted passage. Failing to cite paraphrased information is plagiarism, so please focus on this in our subsequent assignments. If anything about this is still unclear, please connect with me so that I can provide whatever additional clarification you need.

In the Module 2 discussion assignment, you earned credit for your replies. But please remember that you can earn the full 30 points by incorporating, citing, and referencing at least two pieces of information from the course material in each of your replies.

Help with citing and referencing our textbook

Greetings class! From the work I have seen thus far in the course, there appears to be uncertainty regarding how to cite and reference information from our textbook. So I have attached a file with exactly how to do it. This will simply what can be a bit confusing. If you prefer not to download the file for security reasons, I have also posted it as an announcement in the course. Please make sure to take a look before doing your next assignment. And if you have questions, please send them my way.

Citing web pages

Greetings again, After providing guidance yesterday on citing our textbook, I have received some questions on how to cite web pages that do not have page numbers, such as the material on Weber this week. It is simple and here is an example (from APA). Provide a paragraph number (count the paragraphs manually if they are not numbered). Example: People planning for retirement need more than just money—they also “need to stockpile their emotional reserves” to ensure adequate support from family and friends (Chamberlin, 2014, para. 1). https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/citations/quotations/no-page-numbers  Readings from textbook:

-Ch. 4  The Social Theory of Max Weber

-4.1 Max Weber (1864–1920)

-Weber’s Economy and Society: An Outline of Interpretive Sociology (1921–1922)

-Reading 4.1.1: Excerpts from Weber’s Economy and Society: An Outline of Interpretive Sociology (1921–1922)

-Reading 4.1.2 Excerpt from “Science as a Vocation” (1919)

-Max Weber – The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism – “Chapter II – The Spirit of Capitalism”  – click the link below to access article
