To get started, read your chosen text carefully. Make note of the author's intended audience, purposes, strategies, and use of evidence. Consider what elements make the article effective (or not). Take careful notes. When you begin to write about this article, you’ll need to explain it carefully using support from the article itself.
Decide whether you think the author is effective in presenting the article’s argument. Once you’ve decided whether the article is effective or not, your task is to prove it. You will need to explain the article’s claim briefly in the introduction, and then have a thesis in which you explain its effectiveness.
Once you’ve stated your thesis, use your body paragraphs to discuss how the author presents the argument. For example, to discuss the intended audience, consider: which strategies does the author use to attract the audience? What kind of knowledge does the author expect the audience to have already? Who needs this information? To discuss the situation, you might ask what question the author is trying to answer, or what problem the author is trying to solve by writing this article.
Use one additional source that you find on your own to demonstrate a supporting viewpoint that backs up your analysis of the article. Overall, you should be sure to explain how the author did or did not fulfill the article’s purpose in reaching the audience, or in supporting a claim, which you will have to clearly identify.
