Formative Assessment Brief

Reflection is an important activity that allows you to think about your development and enhance your practice. As part of your term 0 learning, you are encouraged to keep a reflective journal. This should be comprised of a series of entries that record your experiences and thoughts related to key academic, professional, and communication skills. The purpose of this reflective journal is to help you think deeply about your academic and professional development, as well as your personal growth.

Reflective Statement Task

Prepare one reflective statement (based on one of your reflective journal entries) that details your reflections about one experience/skill that you have found particularly challenging or useful during your Study for Success, Communication for Success, or Skills for Success modules. In your reflection, you should aim to demonstrate:

  • Your insights into and continued development of your skills and what you have learned about yourself.
  • How your skills development (including use of digital tools and techniques) contributes to your ongoing professional development & employability.
  • Use of appropriate theories, models and academic context to explain and interpret your reflections.
  • Critical reflection and analysis of your skills development.

Reference to secondary materials which support your reflections, including journal articles, textbook citations and use of models. You are allowed to resubmit this single reflective statement as one of the two reflective statements for the summative assessment after addressing any marker feedback you receive.

Guidance

What is a reflective journal? A reflective journal records your ideas, thoughts, and experiences as well as your reflections and insights into the learning process. You will need to think about all the materials you have learned and think about how these apply to you and how they will impact your development and future actions. How to write about your experiences?

  • Use the past tense to describe the skills developments you have undertaken. Use the future tense to express how you plan to develop these skills further.
  • Reflect on your personal experience and propose specific steps you plan to take to improve your skills in the future.
  • The style of your writing can be relatively informal; however, you should still use full sentences.

Style and Formatting guidance

  • Include in-text citations and end-of-text referencing to all secondary materials.
  •  Use either Arial or Times New Roman font.
  • Use 12-point font throughout
  • Use 1.5 spacing and number all pages
