Overview

This assignment is designed to assess learners’ understanding and application of aquatic animal care and nutrition principles within aquaculture settings. Learners will demonstrate their ability to integrate fish health, nutrition, disease management, diagnostic techniques, and responsible aquaculture practices into real-world applications.

The assignment consists of TWO components (Total 55 marks):

1. Group component (40 marks, 20%)

Development of a farm management protocol

2. Individual component (30 marks, 15%)

Public education infographic

The assignment is due on 24 July 2026, Friday, 2359.

1. Group Component (40 marks)

As a group, develop a farm management protocol for an aquaculture facility. The protocol should focus on responsible care practices for fish health and nutrition while integrating diseases prevention and diagnostic strategies.

The type of fish/life-stage of fish to be cultured and the farm can be chosen by the group.

The protocol should include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Introduction to the farm:
    o Species cultured
    o Production objectives (grow-out, broodstock, hatchery etc)
    o Key environmental considerations, if any
  • Farm management:
    o Type of feed
    o Formulation of feed
    o Feeding schedule and strategies
    o Fish stocking strategies
    o Water quality management
    o Biosecurity measures
    o Waste management
    o Ethical and sustainable aquaculture practices
  • Disease prevention and control:
    o Include AT LEAST ONE disease you may anticipate in the farm and a basic response plan for an outbreak
    o Preventative healthcare measures, if any
    o Observation and monitoring techniques
    o Symptoms and transmission
  • Conclusion:
    o Summary of key management recommendations
    o Reflection on importance of responsible aquaculture practices
  • References (if any):
    o Any references and citations should follow the APA style 7th Edition
    o Reference list is not counted towards word count.

You may include diagrams, tables and images (with credits) where appropriate to support your ideas.

  • Recommended length: 2,500 word – 3,500 words (excluding references and appendices)
  • Font: Arial or Times New Roman, size 11 or 12

2. Individual component (30 marks)

Individually, create ONE public education material on aquatic animal care and nutrition. The material should be designed for members of the public with little or no scientific background. The objective is to educate and raise awareness on responsible aquatic animal care and nutrition.

You may choose to create your material based on one of the following formats:

  • Infographic
  • Booklet
  • Brochure

Possible topics may include, but is not limited to:

  • Proper feeding practices for pet fish
  • Preventing common fish diseases
  • Water quality and fish welfare
  • Sustainable aquaculture practices
  • Importance of nutrition in fish health
  • Responsible ornamental fish keeping

The educational material should:

  • Be limited to ONE A4 sheet (may be double-sided)
  • Use clear and appropriate language
  • Include accurate scientific information with references (if applicable)
  • Contain visual elements such as diagrams, icons, illustrations, or charts wherever necessary
  • Reference list (if any)

You may use digital design tools such as ADOBE Photoshop or CANVA to help with the creation of your educational material.
