The Assignment

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:
• Identify the ANA functional areas you are interested in and explain why.
• Identify the TIGER competencies you might develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas you identified and explain why.
• Identify the QSEN competencies you might develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas you identified and explain why.
• Identify domains from the SDOH and explain how the QSEN, ANA functional areas, and TIGER competencies may be used to improve the domains you identified.
Part 2: ANA Competencies and Standards in Nursing Practice
Create a 6- to 8-slide PowerPoint presentation that addresses the following:
• Identify at least one area of the ANA Competencies and/or Standards in Nursing Practice that has prompted you to change your vision of the future and explain how or why. Then, identify at least one area that aligns with your vision of the future and explain how or why.
• Explain how your vision of your future as a nurse informaticist compares with the needs identified in the SDOH.
• Identify at least one challenge you foresee as a nurse informaticist in identifying and predicting deficits in the SDOH.
• Determine how the ANA functional areas, TIGER competencies, SDOH, and QSEN competencies relate to nursing informatics. Are these functional areas and competencies still relevant or aligned to your future role as a nurse informaticist? Why or why not?

The Role of the RN/APRN in Policy Evaluation

In the Module 4 Discussion, you considered how professional nurses can become involved in policy-making. A critical component of any policy design is evaluation of the results. How comfortable are you with the thought of becoming involved with such matters?

Some nurses may be hesitant to get involved with policy evaluation. The preference may be to focus on the care and well-being of their patients; some nurses may feel ill-equipped to enter the realm of policy and political activities. However, as you have examined previously, who better to advocate for patients and effective programs and polices than nurses? Already patient advocates in interactions with doctors and leadership, why not with government and regulatory agencies?

In this Discussion, you will reflect on the role of professional nurses in policy evaluation.

Review community, state, or federal policy evaluation and reflect on the criteria used to measure the effectiveness of the program or policy described.

Post an evaluation topic and a brief description of the evaluation. Discuss how social determinants impact this issue.

Directions: Using the Structuralism theory to analyze the two paintings included below. I have included questions to help you with the analysis.. Make sure to watch the Khan Academy video in the week’s Module to see an example of an analysis. You need to have a clear argumentative thesis/opinion and supporting details. Mention the denotation (direct meaning) and the connotation (emotional meaning prescribed by culture) of each symbol. Now see how these meanings help us understand the cultural conventions present in these images. What do they tell us about that particular historical time? * These paintings represent the Victorian Era where women had little to no means of being independent, and the only way to ensure societal status was marriage. So, think about these concepts when you are doing your analysis. Do you see anything that poses an importance implying a hidden meaning? For example, what does a white dress symbolize?

Draw conclusions.

This assignment has many benefits. First, it requires a search of indexing and abstracting databases from the online library to find an article that meets the specified criteria (must be related to ethics). It also emphasizes what a scholarly article is; to discern between scholarly and non-scholarly writing; to condense someone else's lengthy argument into a concise report; to think critically about what has been read by assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the research; and, thus, to become participants in the discussions regarding the topic at hand.

FYI: Wikipedia is not an acceptable resource for academic writing. Please use the university library for reference. Articles must be peer-reviewed.

Scientific Research Paper Assignment

Learning Objectives:

Demonstrate the ability to use both standard and electronic means of finding information of various sources
Demonstrate the ability to adapt information to a pre-set format (or standard)

This is a Three (3) part assignment

Successful completion of these exercises demands that you demonstrate the ability to use both standard and electronic means of finding information and develop the skills needed to evaluate, select and distill the information into a thoughtful report. NVCC libraries provide staff who are prepared to demonstrate the use of the library resources and help you interpret the different types of resources requested. However, if you have access to other libraries with significant holdings of scientific material and information retrieval technology, these libraries may be used to complete this exercise.

You will receive separate grades for each of the three exercises in scientific literature. *NOTE: Research Papers will only be graded upon successful completion of a research proposal

Exercise 1. RESEARCH PROPOSAL (30 Points)

Before any research can be started, principal investigators (PIs) must often go through several steps of approval. In the real world this can be a single step of doing a proposal or can be multiple steps where smaller to larger requests of information are conducted prior to the start of research. A standard practice is for a PI to submit a white paper which is usually around 10 pages, which is evaluated prior to being requested to submit a full proposal (40+ pages).

For our purposes here, we will do a 250 word abstract which will introduce the topic you are going to do research on. You do not have to have done much more than a cursory research to put this together. You should include an overview of the topic you are investigating, why the topic is or should be of interest to anyone. Discussing why you picked the topic, what is the interesting science, the so what factor, are good ways to complete this assignment.

The impetus for this is two fold, first to familiarize you with what is often a multi-step approval process prior to receiving any grants or approvals to conduct research. The second is, over the past few years I have gotten more than a few research papers that were not science based and I would like to avoid this in the future. It is often a problem that as we begin to study science, the line of where science and pseudoscience is, can be hard to tell. I would like to give you a chance to ensure that your research paper is going to be in line with grading expectations prior to spending time writing.
