Assignment Task:
Title: “Mpox on the move: Why are global cases on the rise?”
Setting the scene: In recent years, the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases have highlighted the importance of understanding zoonotic viruses, such as the Orthopoxvirus Mpox, formally known as monkeypox.
Originating from the rainforests of Central and West Africa, Mpox has historically been confined to sporadic outbreaks in regions where humans interact closely with wildlife. However, recent global health events have brought Mpox into the spotlight, with cases reported far beyond its endemic zones. This shift has raised critical questions about its transmission dynamics, public health preparedness, virulence, mortality rates and the role of globalisation in the spread of infectious diseases.
Task: You are required to produce a piece of print for digital media discussing the possible reasons behind the recent increase in cases of Mpox. Your choice or media is flexible and could for example be:
- A newspaper article.
- An online media article.
- A blog.
- A podcast or video.
You should consider the following when preparing your submission:
- Although this article is meant for the popular media, your research and references should be from academic peer-reviewed publications and reputable sources of original data, rather than other popular news reports or resources.
- Using your scientific knowledge, your submission should focus on interpreting this information before presenting and communicating it to a wider, less specialist audience.
- You should consider exploring the Mpox disease, epidemiology, reporting of infection and behaviours that you find are influencing infection rate in your submission.
How to create and submit a written article:
You can design and create your written article in your own waybut it must reflect the style of your chosen source. For example, if your choice is a newspaper publication, the work you submit must reflect the style and format of that you have chosen.
How to create and submit a video presentation:
You can record your article/visual report using Kaltura which is available to all students. You may need to install this software, and you should do this in advance of the deadline in case you need IT support. This video explains how to submit a video to NILE and you should start here. There are further tutorials to help you with each stage here
